An adventurous outlook is the most important factor that contributes to a thoroughly enjoyable vacation. So holidaymakers should decide in advance to make their trip a lively experience. The run of the mill guided tours to regular ‘tourist traps' can, at the best, provide the traveler with some very good photographs of historic monuments or scenic landscapes. In fact, most bookshops in every small town in every part of the world will offer picture postcards of these same locations at fairly reasonable rates! Tourists should set aside traditional holiday concepts like visiting Hawaii or Disney World or other such places simply “because that's where everyone goes”. They should focus their heart and mind on enjoying a unique experience that will leave its mark on them for the rest of their lives. To put it briefly, they should have a “ Truly Memorable Vacation ”.
Some times vacations that have been well planned, well organized and well conducted can actually end up as terribly boring long distance journeys, with selected stop-overs provided just to break the monotony. When setting off on a holiday trip without too much preparation, anticipating the unexpected can be quite stimulating for those do not worry too much and are confident of handling any problems that may crop up. As a matter of fact, it is these ‘little incidents' that often comprise the most interesting elements of the ‘expedition'. They are the stories that attract the most attention (and often the most laughter) when related to those back home, rather than boring descriptions of ancient buildings, beautiful scenery, shopping sprees or wild animals. The adventurous will be thrilled to ‘discover' their way out when they are hopelessly lost, cant speak the local language and no one can understand a word they are saying! This type of traveler will find the situation even more challenging if his rented car has broken down and he has to try and fix it himself! Add a lot of rain and a littlie thunder and lightening and he just cant wait to get back home and relate the story to his friends! And the perfect ending would be having to hitch a ride to the nearest mechanic in an old jalopy or a farmer's truck. Once this incident has come to a happy ending – with our traveler back in normal circumstances – he just can't wait for the next one to begin.
Shark fishing off the Florida Keys is one sure way to have an exciting holiday. A boat and suitable equipment can be rented locally and the rates are fairly reasonable – just a few hundred dollars. All transactions are strictly in cash. The thrilling anticipation rises the moment the boat starts moving, and the whole world is forgotten if a shark bites – especially if it is a real big one. A little bit of luck can bring in a small hurricane to add to the special effects, but a lot more luck and skill will be needed to get back safely to the shore in the event it does blow in! For those who would like to have their adventure videotaped, a camera crew can be hired to follow in another boat.
Driving a Suburban and hunting for a place to park it in a parking garage in Los Angeles. This is an activity that can bring out the best driving skills and ingenuity in an auto driver. Even seasoned rally drivers will find it a challenge, like going in search of the invisible man! While the average suburban is built 6' 8” in height, the average L.A. parking garage is built with a clearance of just 6'. (No wonder small cars are so popular in L.A.!) So hunting for a place to park can well be the best way to go sightseeing around the city. You're sure to find one somewhere, sometime.
Taking a ride in a cab from Tepic to San Blas, Mexico. Situated at 12,000 high in the mountains, Tepic offers a spectacular view to travelers – especially that of the steep, winding, narrow mountain road they have to take to get to San Blas down below. The sensation is quite similar to that experienced by a parachutist about to jump from a plane, hoping there is nothing wrong with his parachute! Mexican cabbies like to cover the distance in as little time as possible, driving their cabs like sleighs careening down a snow-clad mountain slope. The drivers are considerate enough to provide a crucifix (usually hanging from the rear view mirror) for their more religious customers. And even those who are not so religious would have done a lot of praying before reaching San Blas.
Take a 500 mile walk from Phoenix to Los Angeles in the month of July. This may appear to be a weird idea to many people, but there are a good number who find it quite adventurous. Quite naturally, water will comprise of the main component in the travel equipment.
